kid, youngster

kid, youngster
Kid means "a young goat," in which sense it is rarely used. But kid in two other senses is one of the most ubiquitous words in the language. We use it to refer to a "child or young person" and we use to kid when we mean "to tease, banter, jest with." In both uses, the word is slangy and should be employed sparingly. Youngster is always acceptable for reference to a child or young person, whether boy or girl. Other names for young males are youth, lad, and stripling.
